Marseille
France's second city in size but very very different than Paris. Marseille is more like northern Africa. It has French style buildings (mostly looking forlorn and some in the verge of caving in) and it has croissants and cafes but it all feels like a thin veneer over what Marseille really is - a port city to the African colonies.
We stayed in a hostel which can be a bit ratty to start with and we ate dinner at an African place that motioned us to sit in the back room due to there being females in our presence. I couldn't communicate with them well so I just went up front and pointed at various food and asked how much. Five of us ate well for $15.
The next day we went through an Arab market on the way to the old port and bought some random breads. The old port is clean like it belongs in France but again it feels like a veneer over something else, a little like Disneyland. It was crowded with tourists and we really didn't enjoy it so we got the heck out of there.
I don't really feel like going back to Marseille but I think I need more time there to give it a real shot.
